The Tennessee Supreme Court has appointed Lela Hollabaugh, Bradley Arant Boult Cumming LLP's Nashville office managing partner and Business Litigation Team chair, to the Indigent Representation Task Force. The task force, which will hold its first meeting on November 6, was formed to review practices surrounding attorneys’ compensation for work with defendants who cannot afford legal counsel. Ms. Hollabaugh’s term will last for one year.

The Indigent Representation Task Force is comprised of other court-appointed attorneys, judges, and representatives with ties to Tennessee’s criminal justice system. Members will examine existing elements within the state’s indigent representation system, including indigency determinations, delivery of services, and administration of the indigent representation fund. The task force’s ultimate charge is to guarantee that the system addresses recipient needs and benefits state taxpayers.

“I am honored to have this opportunity to serve the state’s legal system and taxpayers in such a tangible way,” Ms. Hollabaugh said. “I look forward to working alongside my highly respected peers in order to ensure that all proceedings are fair and orderly, and that the needs of the community and the underserved are being met.”

Ms. Hollabaugh has served as the lead trial attorney in more than a dozen jury trials, as well as more than two dozen bench trials, arbitrations and administrative hearings. She advises leading natural gas pipeline companies on issues involving location, land acquisition, construction and operations, and is currently advising on several large-scale pipeline projects in the southeast. Ms. Hollabaugh also represents leading pharmaceutical, medical device and other manufacturers in matters ranging from individual lawsuits to mass tort cases. She is actively involved in several mass tort matters around the country.

Ms. Hollabaugh has served in numerous other leadership positions in legal, industry, and government organizations. She is general counsel to the Nashville Bar Association and a trustee of the Nashville Bar Foundation. She is a past-president of the Nashville Bar Association and is a past member of the International Association of Defense Counsel’s Board of Directors. As a former chair of the Tennessee Board of Professional Responsibility, Ms. Hollabaugh is also listed on the American Arbitration Association’s (AAA) Roster of Neutrals for Commercial Litigation. She holds a J.D. and B.S. (with honors) from the University of Tennessee.
