The 2020 Annual Meeting has been canceled due to coronavirus.

The Board of Directors and staff have been working for weeks on options for our remaining in-person meetings in 2020, and it is with a heavy heart that I report that we have decided to cancel the in-person 2020 Annual Meeting.

As you all know, the 2020 Annual Meeting was to be the capstone of our Centennial Celebration. We weighed every option to be able to have some version of that celebration in person this year, but those choices were not tenable given the uncertainties of the path of this pandemic and people’s abilities and interest in traveling even after we are able to move about more freely.

We absolutely will celebrate the IADC’s 100 years – just with a “plus one” in 2021. It is important to honor the work that our leaders and organizers did this year on our CLE programming, social gatherings and Centennial activities. It is important to give our members the opportunities to come together with their friends and colleagues with whom they share so many memories. At the same time, 2021 is a new year with new leaders who are currently in progress with planning our Midyear and Annual Meeting CLE and events. So we will be having the best of all worlds with two years in one. We still will have many of our planned Centennial events and CLE, but will be working them in to both the Midyear Meeting and Annual Meeting.

In addition, our 2021 Annual Meeting was set to be at The Fairmont Orchid on The Big Island in Hawaii. In assessing our options, we have decided to move Hawaii to our 2023 Annual Meeting and host the 2021 Annual Meeting in Chicago on July 10‐15, 2021 at the Fairmont Chicago. We did this for two key reasons.

First, we acknowledge the next 12-18 months could be hard on everyone in terms of business, financials, and travel. We want to make it as easy as possible for our members to utilize the benefits of belonging and enjoy the in-person IADC experience again. As much as we love our Hawaii meetings and are eager to go back soon, it likely would be difficult for many members to be able to make that trip while we are still feeling the aftershocks of the current pandemic. We hope that by having the meeting in Chicago, more of you will be able to join us.

Second, we were very excited to celebrate our Centennial in Chicago. It is an amazing city with so much to do during the summer. By going to Chicago in 2021, we’ll be able to enjoy many of the aspects of the location as well as many plans that were made for the Centennial. In particular, we had some things planned for people who might only be able to come in for a day or two. Those Centennial plans can go forward in Chicago where it is easier to come in for just a couple days. We are excited to have a phenomenal meeting in Chicago under President Andrew Chamberlin and his planning team in July 2021.

While we won’t be meeting in person at the Annual Meeting in July, the business of the IADC must continue. Specifically, our Nominating Committee will still meet and put together its slate of recommendations for the new Board of Directors. In compliance with our bylaws, we will be having an all-member virtual Opening Session on Monday, July 6, 2020 at which time we will announce the Nominating Committee and conduct any other business required by the bylaws. The Nominating Committee will meet that week, and we will conduct an all-member virtual Closing Session on Friday, July 10, 2020 at which time the members will vote on the slate of Board members presented.

Members will be able to submit comments to the Nominating Committee in writing, or sign up for a 5 minute appointment to meet with the Committee through video conference. We will have more details on that process as well as the times you can sign up for an appointment soon. We will be making sure the schedule includes times across time zones so everyone around the world has a reasonable timeframe to sign up to talk to the Committee virtually.

Thank you for your patience and understanding as we have worked out these details. This is an unprecedented time, and we wanted to make thoughtful decisions that support the members and the Association as much as possible.

Finally, I want to offer a huge “Thank You” to the Board of Directors and especially the IADC staff. While we are not meeting in person at present, the IADC leadership and staff is working twice as hard to bring you value for your membership. The staff has adapted quickly to help us bring you our virtual offerings, and in the coming days, weeks and months, we will be creating new avenues for business development, CLE and camaraderie. We are here for you, your families and your business.
