Shifting Sands of U.S. Privacy Laws

In 2018, California became the first state to pass a comprehensive consumer privacy law. While aimed at regulating those businesses handling California residents’ personal information, the law’s breadth and scope has implications for businesses across the country. Whether motivated by California’s actions or just a sign of the times, many other states have followed suit. In February 2019, there were close to 100 bills pending at the state level addressing some aspect of data privacy. Pressure is mounting for federal legislation to replace the growing patchwork of state laws with a standard, national privacy framework. This Webinar will discuss trends in U.S. privacy laws, operational challenges presented by the existing legal patchwork, and the implications of California’s privacy law taking hold as the de facto national standard in 2020 absent overriding federal legislation.
