The IADC has long held Tenets of Professionalism as part of our Mission, Vision, and Values that articulate our commitment to the highest standards of legal practice and to upholding the rule of law and a functioning civil justice system. Now more than ever, living up to those Tenets is critical. I have two major goals for this year to that end.

The first is to support education and projects that increase public trust and confidence in the judicial system. We are focusing on this in our continuing legal education as well as through work with Lawyers for Civil Justice. To help facilitate that work, we are in the process of creating a 50-State Monitoring Initiative with a member appointee from each State. They will, among other tasks, help identify and support judicial rules and practices that best reflect a fair and functioning judicial system.

The other primary goal of this year is “Members First.” In a rapidly changing world both for us as lawyers and as individuals, it is important that we provide the structure and resources that best speak to the individual needs of our members. “Members First” means not only bringing the best lawyers into the Association but providing them what will help them continue to be the best and serve our civil justice system well.

We have found that people’s schedules, how they consume education, and how they want to interact has changed in certain ways since COVID. We are making some changes, like shortening our Midyear Meeting by a day, continuing to bolster content in our monthly Substantive Committee meetings, and creating smaller, more targeted learning and networking experiences.

Every day there are opportunities for our members to access IADC resources that help them in their practice and their support of the rule of law. The more we can provide our members, the more they can give to their practice and to the civil justice system.
