Congratulations, you have just achieved your dream of becoming a lawyer. Whether you are in-house or a law firm associate, the work now really begins. You not only want to do your job well, but you also want to move up the ladder. How do you distinguish yourself from the herd and capture the attention of the leaders in your department or law firm? Understanding the expectations of your organization’s leadership, defining your role, establishing your voice and doing so much more are vital to your success. All of this involves performance, relationships, strategy, and more than a little politics. Here are the strategies and tactics. 

MODERATOR:
Aldos L. Vance, Altec Inc., Birmingham, Alabama USA

Al Vance is the Associate General Counsel at Altec, Inc., and serves as the General Counsel of Altec Industries, Inc., the leading equipment and service provider for the electric utility, telecommunications, construction, tree care, and lights and signs markets. He is responsible for managing Altec’s international network of outside counsel as it pertains to litigation. He is also responsible for associate and product safety.

Prior to joining Altec, he was a partner in the law firm of Starnes & Atchison, LLP, and practiced with the firm for over a decade. His practice primarily included employment litigation, professional liability defense, insurance defense, and general litigation.

The Legal 500 ranked him as one of the top 100 rising stars amongst the nation's corporate counsel. Al graduated from the City of Birmingham's Project Corporate Leadership in 2013. He is also a 2006 graduate of the Alabama State Bar's Leadership Forum. From 2010-2017, he served as a member of the Alabama State Bar's Board of Bar Examiners and is active in both state and local bar organizations. In 2010, the Birmingham Business Journal designated Al as one of Birmingham’s Top 40 Under 40. 

Al serves on Board of Directors for the International Association of Defense (IADC) as the Vice President for Corporate. He also serves on the board for the Alabama Chapter of the Association of Corporate Counsel, Highlands School, One Place Metro Alabama Family Justice Center, and The UAB Educational Foundation. He is also a member of the Minority Corporate Counsel Association.  

He earned his Bachelor of Civil Engineering degree from Auburn University in 1994 and a Juris Doctorate from the University of Alabama School of Law in 2000.

Timothy A. Pratt, Retired Boston Scientific, General Counsel, Kansas City, Missouri USA

Pivoting from being a nationally-acclaimed trial lawyer with Shook, Hardy and Bacon in 2008, Tim Pratt became General Counsel and Corporate Secretary of Boston Scientific, a multinational medical device company. During his time with Boston Scientific, Tim was selected for the “Corporate Counsel 100” list, which identifies the top most powerful corporate legal advisers in the United States, and he received a “Legend in the Law” award from the Burton Foundation.

Tim will share the keys to success and how to put yourself in position to be successful in your current role, and position yourself for success at the next level.
