Active_Ally_5.9.2024

Join the IADC at 12:00 p.m. CDT on Thursday, May 9, 2024 as we discuss mentoring diverse attorneys as part of our Active Ally series.

While there has been progress on increasing the diversity of attorneys at junior levels, the numbers of diverse attorneys including women, LGBTQ plus, and attorneys of color at mid, senior, and leadership levels at law firms and companies has remained stubbornly low. It is clear that the focus on increasing diversity should be on retention as well as initial recruitment.

Mentorship is a key part of keeping attorneys engaged in their careers and on track during the crucial first ten years of practice. This presentation and discussion will focus on helpful advice and best practices for mentoring diverse attorneys, particularly if your mentee has a different background than you. Topics covered will include: an overview of legal challenges faced by law firms and companies in implementing and maintaining diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEI&B) initiatives; the impacts of implicit bias; advice that is specific to particular diverse groups; and activities and memberships that law firms and companies can sponsor to help underrepresented individuals feel more of a sense of belonging.
