IADC Canadian Class Action Reform Submission

June 13, 2018 02:44 PM

On May 22, 2018, the IADC Canadian Class Actions Project Task Force sent a detailed written submission to the Law Commission of Ontario (LCO), with many recommendations for reform, in response to the LCO’s March 2018 Consultation Paper and Questions.

The submission was the culmination of almost four years of work by the Task Force, including many hours of discussion and consultation. It was drafted by a core group - Scott Maidment, Peter Pliszka, Glenn Zakaib, and Gord McKee (Chair), with assistance from Gord’s partner Nicole Henderson. It was supported and adopted by a number of defense organizations including Lawyers for Civil Justice, the Federation of Defense and Corporate Counsel, DRI - the Voice of the Defense Bar, Canadian Defence Lawyers, and the Product Liability Advisory Council.

If you would like a copy of the submission, please contact Mary Beth Kurzak, IADC Executive Director, at mkurzak@iadclaw.org or Gord McKee at gordon.mckee@blakes.com. A full list of the Task Force members, and more background regarding its creation, can be found at https://www.iadclaw.org/canadian-class-action/. The LCO says it is hoping to release draft recommendations for comment in the late fall, and a final report at the end of the year or early 2019.
