Former IADC President Richard Wilkinson Galiher (President, 1963-64) passed away October 30, 2008, in the District of Columbia. Mr. Galiher joined the IADC in 1949 and was an Emeritus Member at the time of his death.

Mr. Galiher was a graduate of the Catholic University of America, where he lettered in basketball, track, and baseball. He remained close to CUA, teaching courses at the law school and servicing a term as Chairman of the CUA Board of Trustees. CUA conferred numerous recognitions of Mr. Galiher, including the Alumni Achievement Award (1965), a Distinguished Service Award (1969), the President's Medal (1983), an honorary Doctor of Laws degree (1992), and the prestigious James Cardinal Gibbons Medal in 1994.

For more than 50 years Mr. Galiher practiced law in the District of Columbia and Maryland. He was a founding member of Galiher & Stewart (now Galiher, Clarke & Galiher). His name appears as counsel of record on more than 250 reported cases before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia and the D.C. Court of Appeals. In addition to his service for the IADC, Mr. Galiher served in the House of Delegates of the ABA, as chairman of the Tort and Insurance Practice Section of the ABA, and as a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers, the Barristers, and the International Academy of Trial Lawyers. He was a founding member of the D.C. Defense Lawyer's Association.

Mr. Galiher served his community as Director of the Legal Aid Society of the District of Columbia, a member of the Board of Catholic Charities, President of the Archdiocesan Holy Name Society, and General Counsel of the Catholic Youth Organization and the International Association of Police Chiefs.

The IADC was fortunate to have the leadership and support of such an individual. To honor the memory of our past President, a contribution to The Foundation has been made by the IADC.
