Roy Alan Cohen, a principal at the Morristown-based law firm of Porzio, Bromberg & Newman, P.C., has been elected and took office as Vice‐Chair of the American Bar Association Tort, Trial and Insurance Practice Section (TIPS).

Cohen will become Chair‐Elect in August 2017, and Chair of the Section in August 2018, and will serve as Chair of the Long Range Planning Committee and Co‐Chair the Membership Committee of the organization over the next year.

One of the largest sections in the ABA - bringing together almost 20,000 lawyers, judges, law students, and non‐lawyers in the areas of tort law, trial practice, and insurance‐related matters - TIPS is the only organization of its kind, bringing together the nation’s top plaintiff and defense attorneys, corporate legal decision‐makers and in‐house counsel, the judiciary, government lawyers, and many others with relevant interest.

TIPS has long been known for thought leadership and the presentation of leading national Continuing Legal Education (CLE) programs in its areas of concentration. Those programs range widely, from Aviation to Trucking Litigation to Motor Vehicle Product Liability, Toxic Torts and Fidelity & Surety Law, to name a few, and are presented by many of the 31 TIPS general substantive law committees. These programs are often industry events, commensurate with TIPS stature in the legal community.

Cohen is a senior trial lawyer with more than 37 years of experience litigating and trying a wide variety of product liability, toxic tort, construction, environmental contamination, professional liability, premises liability, automotive and trucking, class action, and business litigation matters.

He leads trial teams in New Jersey and New York, often working collaboratively with other lawyers around the country as a virtual law firm. He serves as national, regional, and local counsel to foreign and domestic clients and their lawyers and is outside general counsel to a number of companies.
Cohen has been recognized by peers in numerous professional organizations in which he has served, including as Chair of the International Association of Defense Counsel’s Toxic and Hazardous Substances Committee, Chair of the ABA TIPS Commercial Transportation Litigation Committee, Self‐Insurers and Risk Managers Committee, and Products Liability Committee, CLE Board, and Task Force on Corporate Counsel Involvement, and the New Jersey State Bar Association’s Product Liability and Toxic Tort Section.

Cohen is a member of the Product Liability Advisory Council, the Litigation Counsel of America, and the Trucking Industry Defense Association. He has been recognized in Best Lawyers in America, Top Attorneys in New Jersey by New Jersey Monthly, and in New Jersey Super Lawyers in various categories, has been certified and recertified six times since 1987 by the Supreme Court of New Jersey Board on Trial Certification as a Civil Trial Attorney, and is a frequent author and lecturer on litigation and trial subjects.
